Thanks to @gotofritz for sending this to Tagbento, and asking “Separated at birth?”

Back when the team at Phenotype were designing the logo for Tagbento, they proposed a bunch of options, and these are the ones from the first iteration which contain elements of Sushi & More’s…

For those who’ve avoided Japanese restaurants all their lives, I should add that a bento is a box set of various foods to make up a meal. It’s a more interesting take on the ‘meat and two veg’ tradition here in the UK. A good bento is a curated work of edible art – a variety of balanced flavours, colours, and textures that delights the senses, and also serves its fundamental function of filling your stomach.
And that concept of combining curation and balance and variety and function is what it’s all about when we want to see what’s in your bag, or what’s on your desk – your things are there for many reasons, and it’s rarely just by accident.

In the feedback to Phenotype, I emphasised that yes, we’re called Tagbento, but the logo must stay clear of obvious or leading associations with food. Of course, whoever designed Sushi & More’s logo would include the very things I wanted to avoid. In fact, I was amused when testing the logo options at how many people thought the rejected logos made them think of a Japanese restaurant.

It’s no surprise that the same elements might turn up in Tagbento’s logo – after all, there’s nothing that’s newly created: what’s ‘new’ is simply another combination or product of what’s out there already. You could call it the creative equivalent of the law of conservation of energy, where nothing is created nor destroyed, but merely transformed, and hopefully into something cool or useful like a logo!

If Tagbento were giving awards for geekiest desk, Roninzero’s would be a clear winner. Roninzero took some time out to give Tagbento an interview and tell us more about herself and her workspace. Geek out!

Here is my desk. I have a mac mini that runs Win 7 on a VM. I also have a MacBook Pro that is also running XP and Win 7 on VM. I also have another mac mini off to the side that I run test on. I have an assortment of books and magazines. I am a very big fan of Star Wars, Gundam, Old 80’s cartoons, cheeky humor.
